Waco Texas Newborn Photography: What You Need to Know Before Hiring Someone!

Are you expecting a baby and wondering if newborn photos are really worth it? Or maybe you love photos but feel overwhelmed trying to choose the right photographer. If that’s you, take a deep breath — you’re in the right place.

As a Waco-based newborn photographer, I’ve worked with many families. Initially, they felt unsure. Yet, every single one later told me how thankful they were that they did newborn photos. These early days pass faster than you think, and photos help you hold onto them.

Here are 10 important things you should know before hiring a newborn photographer. I’ll start with the one that surprises parents the most.

1. Your Baby Doesn’t Need to Be “Perfect” (This One Matters Most)

Many parents share their concerns with me. They say things like, “I was worried my baby wouldn’t sleep.” They also say, “They had baby acne.” Sometimes they mention, “They were a little early.” Here’s the truth: that’s normal newborn life.

I once photographed a sweet baby who stayed wide awake the whole session. Instead of fighting it, we leaned into it — bright eyes, tiny expressions, and connection with mom and dad. Those became the parents’ favorite images.

Newborn photography is about real babies, not perfection.

2. Experience With Newborns Matters More Than Style

Pretty photos are important, but safety comes first. I am safety certified through the APNPI (Accredited Professional Newborn Photographers International). I have taken classes in safety through the APNPI, also with a NICU nurse. Your baby’s safety is my top priority. I will not sacrifice safety for a shot!

When hiring a newborn photographer, make sure they:

  • Specialize in newborns
  • Know safe posing techniques
  • Move slowly and calmly
  • Never rush your baby

In my studio, baby safety and comfort are always the top priority. If the baby needs feeding, cuddles, or breaks, we stop. Every time.

3. The Best Time for Newborn Photos

Most people think the best time to photograph newborns is between 5 and 14 days. Yet, in my experience, between 12 and 21 days has been the sweet spot for me. Feeding issues are usually worked out, and mom’s milk is in! By this point, parents and baby are getting to know each other a little better. This helps so much to ask what they like and don’t like, and the parents know!

I once asked a mom if her baby liked something. Her response was, “I really don’t know. We just met.” That still makes me laugh because its so true!

The reasons to come in before the 21 day mark are:

  • Sleep more deeply
  • Curl naturally
  • Are easier to pose gently

I always suggest booking while you’re in your second trimester for best availability.

4. You Don’t Have to Bring Much (I’ve Got You)

Parents often show up with bags full of supplies — and end up not needing most of it.

I offer:

  • Wraps
  • Blankets
  • Props
  • Simple headbands
  • Wipes
  • Changing table
  • Boppie
  • Bottle warmer

If you want to bring something personal, like a handmade blanket or a family heirloom, I love adding that in.

5. You’ll Be In the Photos (Even If You’re Tired)

This one can feel scary, especially for moms. You feel exhausted or not “camera-ready.” But I promise — you’ll never regret being in these photos. I will always say if you resist being in the photos, you can never come back and do this over. I will take them, and if you don’t want them, then just don’t choose those in your package. I’ve never had a parent leave behind a family photo!

Years from now, your child won’t see tired eyes. They’ll see love.

6. Siblings Are Welcome — With a Little Flexibility

Sibling photos can be beautiful… and unpredictable. And that’s okay.

I’ve learned that letting siblings be themselves works best. Some sit still. Some don’t. We follow their lead and capture a real connection.

7. Sessions Are Calm and Slow (Not Rushed)

Newborn sessions usually last 3-4 hours. That sounds long, but it allows time for:

  • Feeding
  • Diaper changes
  • Snuggles

Nothing is rushed. Babies set the pace.

8. Editing Takes Time — And It’s Worth the Wait

Your images aren’t rushed through a filter. Each one is hand-edited with care.

Most galleries are delivered within 2–3 weeks, and the final images are polished, soft, and timeless.

10. These Photos Become More Valuable With Time

Right now, you’re in the thick of newborn life. Sleepless nights. Tiny diapers. Big emotions.

Years from now, these photos will remind you just how small they once were.

And that’s priceless.
